the defiant blade

Trigger Warning: Murder, death, arson
In the year 1998, a beautiful baby girl was born. She adorned a beautiful crowned head with silk black hair and was honored the name Jin Seo Yeon.
Born into a loving yet poor family, Seoyeon became the oldest sister with time. Her house was almost always crowded with her parents, her grandmother, and her brothers. Although it was cramped, it was full of fun and mischief.
Before Seoyeon started school, she was taught the ways of traditional dance by her grandmother. She fell in love with dance early; mostly exploring the traditional seungmu dance of Korea. She loved dancing with her grandmother, performing for her family on occasion, and dancing mostly for herself.
In school, she worked hard to maintain grades. She was quick witted and always spoke her words with grace. Although, her playfulness would sometimes overcome her. She joined the dance team and carried on her love for dance throughout grade school and high school.
As for her demeanor, she was very reserved. Her smart mind held her back from making friends. Her absence within her peers made people think she was stuck up. However, dance helped her express and embrace who she really was. The few friends she made were mostly made up of the dance team.
During her second year of high school, Seoyeon met with tragedy. Unknown to her, her father had gotten himself into more debt than he could handle. Her mother, although she knew, kept a blind eye for her children. One day, while she was at dance auditions, her parents were met with gang members whom they owed money. As Seoyeon danced with her silk flag, raising it up above her head, so did the gun that fired the warning shot. When she thrusted her flag outwards, so did the cocktail bomb that flew and crashed into her living room window. That day, Seoyeon danced furiously without knowing why. She danced like the fire that spread throughout her home; engulfing all her belongings and memories in the flames. She wasn't graced with the chance to say goodbye. She wasn't blessed enough to kiss her umma, her appa, her halmeoni, or her dongsaengs farewell. As fast as her audition went, the faster the flames grew.
On her walk home, she saw it. Her worst nightmare was happening before her eyes. From miles away, she could see the black deadly plumes that rose into the atmosphere. Fire engines raced past her, causing her silk black hair to cover her eyes as if the gods were telling her to look away. At first, she was too shocked to comprehend the location of the fire. First she walked, then she jogged, then she ran as fast as she could to find her home and her family up in flames. Falling to her knees, she wept as men in suits raced in the opposite direction. Only a glimpse was caught of a scarred face through her heavy tears.
It took Seoyeon years to recover, if you could even say that. If there were anything good to come from that, her audition impressed the judges and recruiters who attended. Years of reaching out, she declined. She had stopped dancing. She held herself in isolation.
It wasn't until the day she saw the familiar scarred face. He was surrounded by other men in familiar suits. She was out late at night, walking through the shortcut to the sanctuary she stayed at. Grabbing her mace and the knife in her pocket, she drew up her hood and walked past them. As she predicted, one of the men shouted at her, saying despicable things in attempt to lure her his way. She stopped in her tracks then turned. Calculating steps. One... two... three... four... five... six... seven... eight! She shoved her knife right through the chest of the disgusting man. Two more men moved fast, however she was faster. Moving like the silk flag she danced with, she cut the face of one before her fist made her way around to the gut of the second man. While the men fell to the ground, she caught up the scarred face man.
"Halmeoni... forgive me."
STABBED through the heart!
That was the day she danced again – not for herself but for her family.
